Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)

Useful information for patients on Rhinoplasty procedures - improving the external shape of the nose.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as nose reshaping surgery or a "nose job", is a surgical procedure designed to alter the size, shape, or proportions of the nose. The procedure may involve reducing or increasing nasal size, refining the nasal tip, modifying the bridge, narrowing the nostrils, or adjusting the angle between the nose and upper lip.

In some cases, rhinoplasty may also improve breathing function when performed in conjunction with correction of structural issues such as a deviated nasal septum.

Rhinoplasty may be performed using either an open or closed surgical approach. The most appropriate technique depends on the patient's anatomy and surgical goals.

When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty is considered a well-established procedure. However, as with all surgery, there are risks and limitations that should be discussed with your surgeon.

Who Is It For?

This procedure may be considered by patients who:

  • Wish to improve the appearance or proportions of their nose.
  • Feel self-conscious about the size, shape or profile of their nose.
  • Have completed facial growth and development.
  • Experience functional concerns that may benefit from surgical correction.
  • Are in good general health and have realistic expectations.

Preparation

Before surgery, patients usually undergo:

  • A detailed medical history review.
  • Physical examination and nasal assessment.
  • Review of current medications.
  • Discussion of surgical goals and expectations.
  • Smoking cessation where appropriate.

Useful Information

Ensure you consider all aspects of a procedure. You can speak to your surgeon about these areas of the surgery in more detail during a consultation.

Length

How Long Is the Procedure?

Typically 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

Anesthesia

Do I Need Anesthesia?

Rhinoplasty is commonly performed under general anesthesia, although intravenous sedation combined with local anesthesia may be suitable in selected cases. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option.

Inpatient/Outpatient

Is The Procedure Inpatient or Outpatient?

Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day. In some cases, an overnight stay may be recommended.

Additional Information

Several side effects may occur after surgery:

  • Swelling of the nose and surrounding tissues.
  • Bruising around the eyes and nose.
  • Nasal congestion or stuffiness.
  • Light bleeding
  • Mild discomfort.
  • Temporary numbness around the nose.

Potential risks include:

  • Infection.
  • Bleeding.
  • Persistent asymmetry or contour irregularities.
  • Unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome.
  • Breathing difficulties.
  • Delayed wound healing.
  • Need for revision surgery from unsatisfactory nasal shape or incomplete improvement

Open rhinoplasty may leave a small scar on the underside of the nose, while closed rhinoplasty leaves no visible external scar, as incisions are made within the nostrils.

Most patients return to work and light activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Swelling and bruising generally improve significantly during this period.

Strenuous exercise should usually be avoided for several weeks, according to your surgeon's advice. Patients should avoid activities that may cause trauma to the nose and protect the area from excessive sun exposure during the healing process. The use of a sunblock that provides both UVA and UVB protection is useful.

Although much of the swelling settles within the first few months, final results may take up to 12 months or longer to fully achieve.

Rhinoplasty can provide long-lasting changes to the appearance of the nose and may improve facial balance and proportion. Functional improvements may also be achieved when breathing-related concerns are addressed during surgery.

Please note: Individual results vary from patient to patient due to factors such as anatomy, healing characteristics, skin thickness and overall health. To understand what results you can expect, please consult with a qualified aesthetic plastic surgeon.
