Neck Liposuction (Submental Liposuction)

Useful information for patients on Neck Liposuction procedures - removing areas of excess fat from the chin and neck.

What Is Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a common surgical procedure designed to remove areas of excess and stubborn fat from the chin and around the neck. It can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other procedures such as a a neck lift.

The technique involves the removal of unwanted fatty tissue using a cannula and vacuum device, sometimes combined with laser lipolysis, to refine neck contour and improve definition between the chin and neck.

Commonly treated areas include the jawline, jowls, and neck, with the goal of improving overall shape and definition.

When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, neck liposuction is considered safe and effective. However, as with all procedures, there are risks that should be discussed with your surgeon.

Who Is It For?

Neck liposuction may be considered by patients who:

  • Have excess and stubborn fat in the neck or beneath the chin that was not removed from regular diet and exercise.
  • Have good skin elasticity.
  • Show minimal platysmal banding (visible neck muscle bands).
  • Are in good general health and have realistic expectations.

Preparation

Before surgery, patients usually undergo:

  • A detailed medical history and physical examination.
  • Review of medications and any necessary adjustments.
  • Lifestyle guidance such as smoking cessation where appropriate.

Useful Information

Ensure you consider all aspects of a procedure. You can speak to your surgeon about these areas of the surgery in more detail during a consultation.

Length

How Long Is the Procedure?

The procedure typically takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Anesthesia

Local anaesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anaesthesia may be used depending on the patient.

Inpatient/Outpatient

Is The Procedure Inpatient or Outpatient?

Most patients go home the same day, as this is usually an outpatient procedure.

Additional Information

  • Swelling and soreness.
  • A temporary burning sensation in the treated areas (usually manageable with outpatient treatment).

  • Infection.
  • Contour irregularities or asymmetry.
  • Pigmentation changes of the skin (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation).
  • Temporary or permanent changes in sensitivity in the treated areas.
  • Temporary nerve injury, which can be permanent in some rare cases.

Recovery varies between individuals, but most patients can expect swelling and bruising to gradually improve over several weeks. A compression garment is commonly recommended during the recovery period to help support healing and optimise contouring results. Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions based on your individual treatment plan.

Final results can be seen after 3-6 months.

Neck liposuction can achieve good results in patients with excess fat along the neck, particularly those with good skin elasticity and minimal platysmal banding (thickening of the two edges on the neck muscles, from aging).

Please note: Individual results vary from patient to patient due to varying factors such as age, skin quality, bone structure, and overall health. To understand what results you can expect, please consult with a qualified aesthetic plastic surgeon.
