How ISAPS Promotes Safety

ISAPS is dedicated to patient safety above all. Since it was founded in 1970, ISAPS has been committed to safety in aesthetic plastic surgery for people across the globe.

Patient safety is central to everything ISAPS does.

As the world’s leading professional organization for aesthetic plastic surgery, ISAPS works globally to raise standards, educate surgeons, and protect patients through evidence‑based guidance, rigorous education, and ethical leadership.

ISAPS promotes safety not only in the operating room, but across every stage of patient care - from surgeon training and clinical standards to informed decision‑making and public education.

A Comprehensive Approach to Patient Safety

Patient safety in aesthetic plastic surgery depends on far more than technical skill alone. ISAPS takes a holistic approach that recognizes safety as a system - encompassing patient selection, surgeon qualifications, procedures performed, clinical environments, ethical conduct, and informed patient choice. This integrated approach underpins all ISAPS initiatives, standards, and educational efforts worldwide.

The ISAPS Patient Safety Diamond

ISAPS Patient Safety Diamond, introduced by past ISAPS President Dr Foad Nahai, which defines the four essential pillars required for safe aesthetic surgery:

  • The Right Patient – Appropriate selection, realistic expectations, and informed consent
  • The Right Procedure – Evidence‑based procedures selected for individual patient needs
  • The Right Surgeon – Proper training, certification, and ethical responsibility
  • The Right Facility – Accredited environments equipped for safe surgical care

When all four elements are present, patient safety is maximised. A weakness in any one area significantly increases risk.

A Framework for Safer Aesthetic Surgery

ISAPS actively promotes the Quad A framework, a globally recognised patient safety model that focuses on:

  • Appropriate Patient Selection
  • Appropriate Procedure
  • Appropriate Anaesthesia
  • Appropriate Facility Accreditation

Quad A reinforces that safety begins long before surgery and depends on sound clinical judgment, qualified personnel, and properly equipped facilities.

Global Standards and Clinical Guidance

ISAPS develops and publishes internationally recognised statements and guidelines that define best practice in aesthetic plastic surgery.

These resources address critical areas including:

  • Surgical safety and risk reduction
  • Ethical patient care
  • Professional accountability
  • Emerging technologies and procedures

The Patient Safety Guidance Library includes ISAPS‑developed standards as well as selected statements from Global Alliance Partners. Third‑party resources are shared for professional information and awareness and do not imply ISAPS endorsement.

All ISAPS guidance is developed and approved by expert committees and reflects current scientific evidence and international consensus.

Education and CPD

High‑quality education is a cornerstone of patient safety. ISAPS supports surgeon competence and lifelong learning through:

  • Accredited educational programs
  • International congresses and symposia
  • The Aesthetic Plastic Surgery peer‑reviewed journal
  • Online educational resources, including MedOne

By promoting evidence‑based education, ISAPS helps surgeons deliver safer, more effective care worldwide.

Patient Safety Committee

The ISAPS Patient Safety Committee plays a vital role in advancing safety initiatives across the organization.

The committee:

  • Develops patient safety statements and guidance
  • Monitors emerging risks and trends
  • Advises ISAPS leadership on global safety priorities
  • Collaborates with international partners to improve standards worldwide

Ethics and Professional Conduct

ISAPS promotes ethical practice, transparency, and professional accountability among its members. Through standards and educational initiatives, ISAPS:

  • Encourages responsible patient selection and informed consent
  • Discourages unsafe or unethical practices
  • Supports ethical advertising, public relations, and media engagement

These efforts protect patients and strengthen public trust in aesthetic plastic surgery.

Consumer Protection

ISAPS is strongly committed to protecting the public from unsafe practices and misleading information. The ISAPS Executive Committee works to:

  • Address false or misleading claims
  • Raise awareness of risks posed by unlicensed or inadequately trained practitioners
  • Promote the safe use of approved procedures, products, and technologies
  • Maintain exacting guidelines covering advertising, public communications, and media conduct

These measures support transparency, accountability, and patient confidence.

Empowering Patients Through Education

ISAPS believes patient safety includes access to accurate, unbiased, and reliable information.

Through its Patient Education resources, ISAPS helps patients:

  • Choose qualified and appropriately trained surgeons
  • Research procedures and understand potential risks
  • Make informed decisions, including when considering surgery abroad

These resources also support better communication between patients and their care teams.
