Useful information for patients on Lower Blepharoplasty procedures - reducing puffy bags or whitish reveal on lower eyelids.
Lower eyelid surgery, or lower blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that enhances the appearance and function of the lower eyelids. It is designed to address under-eye bags, loose skin and eyelid laxity. Depending on your needs, this may involve removing or repositioning fat, tightening the underlying muscle and excising redundant skin.
Two main surgical approaches are used:
The choice of technique depends on your anatomy and desired outcome.
Lower blepharoplasty is commonly performed for cosmetic reasons (reducing puffiness and rejuvenating a tired appearance) but, in some cases, it is also a medical procedure, for example, when lower eyelid laxity leads to inward or outward rotation of the lid, including what is sometimes referred to as a “whitish reveal” of the inner eyelid.
When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, lower eyelid surgeries are considered safe and effective. However, as with all surgery, there are risks that should be discussed with your surgeon.
This procedure may be considered by patients who:
Patients with certain conditions, including dry eye, prominent eyes (proptosis), bleeding disorders or significant light sensitivity (photophobia), require thorough preoperative evaluation.
Before surgery, patients usually undergo:
Ensure you consider all aspects of a procedure. You can speak to your surgeon about these areas of the surgery in more detail during a consultation.
How Long Is the Procedure?
Typically, 1 to 2 hours.
Do I Need Anesthesia?
Local anesthesia with sedation, intravenous anesthesia or general anesthesia may be utilized. Your surgeon will recommend the most suitable option based on your needs and surgical plan.
Is The Procedure Inpatient or Outpatient?
Most patients go home the same day, as this is usually an outpatient procedure.
Several side effects may apply after the procedure:
Some possible risks below:
Patients are typically advised to use topical eye ointment; over-the-counter lubricating eye drops and cold compresses in the first 48 hours to reduce swelling. Sleeping with your head elevated for the first 2 nights can also assist in minimizing bruising.Showering is usually permitted the day after surgery. Sutures, if placed, are generally removed after about 7 days.
Most swelling settles within 2 weeks, with many patients resuming social activities and work within 5 to 10 days. Contact lenses are typically safe to wear again after approximately 2 weeks. Strenuous activity and alcohol should be avoided for at least 3 weeks. Blood-thinning medications are usually resumed from the second postoperative day, unless your surgeon advises otherwise.
Results are typically visible within 3 to 4 months. Lower eyelid surgery provides long-lasting improvements, helping restore a fresher, more youthful look. However, natural aging will continue over time. Protecting the eye area from sun exposure and following your surgeon’s aftercare guidance is key to preserving optimal results.
Please note: Individual results vary from patient to patient due to varying factors such as age, skin quality, bone structure, and overall health. To understand what results you can expect, please consult with a qualified aesthetic plastic surgeon.
